Summary:

Lake water always contains dissolved and suspended substances of organic and mineral origin. They reach the lakes with the atmospheric precipitation and with the surface run-off and from the catchment. It also contains metabolites of aquatic plants and animals and the products of their decay. These constitute what are known as physico-chemical complexes which differ not only from lake to lake but also with time in the same lake under the influence of climate and human interference. In the following pages we have attempted to give a generalised picture of certain physico-chemical complexes and their behaviour in the lakes around Hyderabad. These lakes were chosen for present discussion keeping in mind the differences in their age, morphometry and intensity of human interference.
